HOW DO I DETERMINE THE LOADING NEEDED FOR MY MEZZANINE FLOOR?
Not sure about the required loading? No problem. Loadings are typically calculated using British Standard load tables,
matched to the intended use of your mezzanine floor. When requesting a quote, please specify how you plan to use the
mezzanine floor.
For storage purposes, indicate whether you need mezzanine floors for:
• Light Use, which means 4.8 kN/m (480 kg per square metre)
• Medium Use, which means 7.32 KN/m (732 kg per square metre)
• Heavy Use, which means 9.6 kN/m (960 kg per square metre)
If you are unsure, contact our mezzanine floor sales team for guidance.
DO MEZZANINE FLOORS REQUIRE BUILDING REGULATION APPROVAL?
Yes, Building Regulation approval is required. We can handle the application process for you through our approved
inspector scheme, saving you time and hassle. This includes providing engineering drawings, calculations, and
specifications and liaising with the approved inspector.
You may need to supply floor slab details and a building plan showing all external fire exits. Once submitted, approval
typically takes around 5 working days.
DO MEZZANINE FLOORS REQUIRE PLANNING PERMISSION?
Not always. Planning permission is only required if your premises share car parking or parking under Council ownership.
WHY DO SOME MEZZANINE FLOORS REQUIRE FIRE RATING?
A mezzanine floor requires a one-hour fire rating under Building Regulations if:
• The floor size exceeds 400 m?.
• The floor area is more than 50% of the room where it is installed.
• More than three people will be working on the floor simultaneously.
• The mezzanine is used for purposes other than storage, automated storage, or maintenance.
Note: Fire rating may not be required if you extend a sprinkler system to the mezzanine’s underside, though this can be
expensive.
WILL INSTALLING A MEZZANINE FLOOR DISRUPT MY BUSINESS?
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO INSTALL A MEZZANINE FLOOR?
CAN I MINIMISE THE NUMBER OF COLUMNS SUPPORTING THE FLOOR?
We can design the column grid to suit your needs. However, an economical grid is typically 4.0 m x 3.5 m
ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO CONSIDER?
Yes, mezzanine floors require:
• Smoke Detection
• Emergency Lighting
• Fire Exit Signs
You may need a local qualified electrician for these installations. Additionally, access to a forklift truck will assist with
unloading and installation. If unavailable, contact our sales team for assistance.
SHOULD I INFORM MY LANDLORD ABOUT THE INSTALLATION?
Yes, you must inform your landlord. They will likely require the mezzanine to comply with building regulations and may
want to review the drawings for approval.
HOW DO I SELECT THE RIGHT DECKING FOR MY MEZZANINE FLOOR?
• Internal floors typically use 38 mm P6 thick high-density flooring-grade chipboard.
• Floors where any liquid is likely to cumulate require 8 m PS high density flooring grade chipboard.
• External platforms use galvanised steel chequer plates or open mesh flooring to resist weather damage.
